Chi Nei Tsang (pronounced chee nay song) is an ancient hands on healing abdominal massage rooted in Traditional Chinese medicine. Translated, chi nei tsang means “internal energy transformation” and is a comprehensive approach to detoxifying, energizing and strengthening the body’s internal systems.
Chi nei tsang, a massage that works directly on the organs themselves, combines a gentle, skillful touch with conscious breathing to bring about a harmonious flow of energy to all the major systems of the body. This work stimulates the lymphatic system and assists in detoxification, elimination, circulation and digestion. It is beneficial to the immune system and in boosting the metabolism. Physical tension, restrictions, toxins and emotions stored in the abdomen are released allowing the body to find balance and function at a more optimal level.
The breath-work quiets the nervous system, further bringing the body’s awareness inward. It is in this space of deep relaxation that the body’s innate wisdom can direct the chi (energy)’to where it is needed for healing. Even though the work is mainly done on the abdomen, chi nei tsang can have far reaching effects throughout the body. Chi nei tsang can be used alone as a treatment or as a compliment to other therapies such as Swedish massage, reiki, psychotherapy, acupuncture, osteopathy, and reflexology.
Chi nei tsang can be helpful for:
- Chronic pain
- Digestive disorders
- Constipation
- Fertility issues
- Menstrual discomfort
- Pelvic pain
- Pre and post surgery for easier recoveries
- Stress
- Insomnia
- Structural misalignments and posture
- Clearing out unprocessed emotional pain
- Greater vitality and mental clarity
Chi nei tsang practitioners teach self healing techniques to their clients. These simple yet powerful tools allow them to continue receiving the benefits of chi nei tsang between sessions. It is not only a body therapy technique but a whole discipline involving training in energy cultivation and meditation to help open the body, mind and spirit.
What to Expect During a Session
During a chi nei tsang session you will remain fully clothed. Your clothing will be adjusted so the abdomen is accessible. You will lie in a comfortable position on your back with your legs slightly elevated. For a few moments, my hands rest gently on your belly. You are guided through some simple breathing techniques and then we begin the journey of gently unwinding the belly, releasing tension and blockages by working directly with the organs and energy pathways. The massage stimulates your body’s ability to heal, clearing stagnant energies and releasing what is no longer needed or serves a purpose. You may feel peaceful, grounded, more comfortable in your body and better in tune with your true self. On occasion, a bundle of steamed herbs are applied to the abdomen or energy points. These warming and soothing herbs have a calming and detoxifying effect on the body. The session will be followed by a 10 minute meditation (resting time to allow the body to integrate the work that has just been received).
